A police officer escorting Mayor Bloomberg was attacked today in a subway station in lower Manhattan, police said.
A 30-year-old man uttered a profanity and jumped the uniformed officer on the platform of the Fulton Street station, cops said.
The two struggled, rolling around on the platform, before the suspect was subdued.
The cop hurt his arm and back during the fight. A second, plainclothes officer who came to his aid injured his wrist. Both officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.
The mayor was never in any danger, and was heard to remark that perhaps it was high time to ditch his NYPD escort in favor of a hobo subway dweller one.
"Listen I'm only doing the math here, okay?" the Mayor said, "two cops to take on one tunnel tramp probably means I could replace the sworn officer squad with hobo's and in the process save the city something along the lines of a third to one-half of the monies spent on my security details."
Other news from the Mayors office appeared contradictory, as Deputy Commissioner Ketchum sent dozens of emails to neighboring states warning of the hobo menace while asking them to join with a proposed NY Lunatic-Tramp-Ban.
