I respectfully call your attention to the sinister of this page in order to quote from Noah Webster. Ah hell with it, here it is again just to be sure:
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States.
Mr. Webster was, among many other things, a Federalist. The anti-gunners say, that since our Constitution can be amended, the Federalists didn't truly believe that the people would need arms to fight off tyranny. Why fight when you can simply ask Congress to do what you wish it to do.
Hogwash. It was because we were armed that the Federalists believed tyranny could not take root in the United States.
The Federalists were sure, too sure of this perhaps, but the Anti-Federalists were paranoid and cajoled them to include in the Bill of Rights an irrefutable warrant that assured the right of all Americans to bear arms.
Thank the heavens for paranoia.
Noah Webster, and men like him, often scoffed at the need to emphasize the painfully obvious, but soon came around to support the 2nd Amendment.
But never because he and they did not believe in the right it called attention to.
Never content to let a sleeping dog lie (What does Michelle Obama have to do with this? Editor), the anti's then counter with the premise that while it might be okay to defend your country the Constitution says nothing about defending your home or property.In retort: stupid is as stupid does.
